My former Student Heidi Rojas is a song writer and recording artist. She just released a new single called La Situacion about being raised as an American with Latina heritage. Her song reminds me that sociology is in everyday life and a part of all fields of study. I am so gratified that she is using her sociological imagination in her work! Rock on, Heidi!!
From her website:
Heidi Rojas is a hit songwriter and singer based in Los Angeles, CA. She co-wrote two UK #1 singles: Little Mix’s first single “Wings” and Cheryl Cole’s single “Crazy Stupid Love” among many other notable releases. She is also a songwriting and performance coach with many students around the world. Heidi also develops artists, using her 15 years of experience and relationships in the music industry to help artists fulfill their career goals.
A little backstory on La Situacion from Heidi's TikTok page here.
La Situacion touches on race and the perpetual foreigner stereotype as well as the fetishization of racial ambiguity and perceived "exotic-ness".
Heidi also wrote and recorded "Madre the Creator" another song using sociological mindfulness that sings to female empowerment and motherhood as empowerment.
