And how much did you spend on your black leather jacket?
Is it you or your parents in this income tax bracket?"
- Cake
3. How does class play itself out at our high school, or in high school in general? Does high school reinforce or prepare you for fitting into a social class? If so, how? Give some examples from our high school. Additionally, how do you think moving up or down would affect you? Which would be tougher? What if you married/dated someone who was very low income or someone rich? What difficulty would this cause in your family and friends?
well overall its not completly the easiest question to answer considerng that I have grown up in a mostly lets just say well set area. In stevenson its all about having the best stuff wearing the best name brands and blah blah blah. The cool thing is with my friends and I are that we are about ourselves and we are not so much worried about everything that is going on around us.
ReplyDeleteP.S get me out of the ADA room its so boring.

I can't spring you out, but what happened? I thought you were cool as a cucumber when you left yesterday.
ReplyDeleteDo you think there are students at SHS that can't have the best stuff, name brands etc...? How does that affect them?
that cake song rocked!
ReplyDeleteI think class plays a big part at Stevenson. If someone isnt as weathly as the rest of the school they feel alone. I mean even for me, my family aren't millionairs.I dont go shopping everytime I see a shirt that I want to buy. I dont have a coach backpack. Even with these small things I almost at times feel abnormal. Especially with prom coming up, people are buying $500 dresses. My parents would NEVER buy me a 500$ dress! I really cant believe the extent people go to to have the "cool" things..like dresses or even backpacks. Some people think that by having these things people will "like" them more. Their just things.
ReplyDeleteI think it's fun to note that while materialism seems to be a big thing about upperclass culture, the opposite is true of the less wealthy. It seems like Katie, Mike, and I all agree that a brand is frivolous, and I think that echoes our upbringing and supports my conclusion that "class" is a state of mind and not a state of money. If class is brandnames, then sure it's cash. But if it's the ability to carry yourself with dignity and self-respect, then it has alot more to do with upbringing which is linked to money, but not dependent on it.
ReplyDeleteclass is fairly important at stevenson. for almost every kid at stevenson their parents have already set aside a certain amount of money for college, they can go wherever they want, mine included. i think it is hard for most stevenson kids to understand that college is expensive as hell and they have no idea how easy that have it. one of my friends who is a legit genuis, im talking 33 on the act and over a 4.0, his parents spent most of his college fund on his sister, and now he is looking to go to air force or army to pay for his college. its just sad and it makes me feel bad that i do have the money to go to college, it makes me feel like i dont deserve it, people like my friend deserve it.
ReplyDeletealso cake is awesssommmeee i'll make you a cd if you want
I KNEW THAT WAS CAKE!! Their lyrics are always very meaningful.
ReplyDeleteI think class doesn't effect us much in our school because most of the people are close to the same class, even if their parents aren't. Most of the people get along with each other even facing that were a little different. If someone were to move up of down in a social class, they would most likely still have the same friends. A certain social class doesn't mean much at our school.
