Growing Pains

We have been discussing how teens are socialized in America; that is how teens are influenced by American culture to act a certain way. One of the hot button issues for teens is alcohol consumption and frequently the discussion breaks down into one about alcohol and legality. But the issue is larger than that. In what ways are you held back from maturity, responsibility and independence? How does society add to this? In what ways are you allowed (legally) to prove that you are indeed, mature, responsible and independent?

  1. We are no longer a collection of red and blue states. We are the United States...but, somehow we're still different.

  2. I think that teens act how society portrays them to act. We as teens know how we are viewed by society so it is easy and makes us comfortable to act that way. I do think that teens are held back from being mature because our society views teens as immature and too young to know anything so even if teens are mature, they aren't viewed as mature simply because of their age. We are held back from being responsible because people don't want to trust teens. For example, a neighbor of mine would rather have my 14 year old sister babysit her kids than me, probably because they think I'm older and more likely to cause trouble and act irresponsibly. We are legally allowed to vote and go to war, but those are the only things we can really do at age 18 to show that teens can be mature and independent.

  3. I also agree that teens act the way society wants them to act which is kind of annoying. I think that teens are held back because people think that were less mature and can't handle the real world. This kind of annoyes me bacuse a certain age doesn't really mean your more mature. For example one of my sisiters is 21 and alot of the time I act alot more mature then her.

  4. I don’t think teens are held back at all, b/c theses rules that we have set up are easy to break without getting caught. I know some rules are important, but I think someone who is mature should know what rules should be followed and what should be broken.

  5. I agree with what Mike said, we might have set rules that we are suppose to obey by however, there are a lot of teenagers who don't. There have been numerous teens who have drivin under the influence and who have had drinking parties. I know these rules are out to only benefit teens but not all teens are like this. Yes I agree that teens who are out of control don't deserve to drink because they are not mature enough, but what about the kids who just want one glass of wine? After all kids in France get to have wine at dinner.
